Whose were previous young First XV players ? Who are North West Mercenaries ? How Many tries have the backs scores this season ?

On the touchline on Saturday there was some speculation about past young players, due to our latest recruit.

Mark Wilson was mention, as was Chris Downham, whilst I came up with Dan Lowther and Hugh Lockhart (who nobody else would have remembered as he only made one appearance as a substitute away at Caldy)

Liking a challenge, I did a bit of research and Dan beat Mark by two days to be the youngest debut of those I looked at, at 17 years and 167 days. Chris and Hugh were 18 when they made their debuts, as was Reece Tomlinson, and I think Billy Coxon, although I am not sure exactly when in the season his first game was.

The other 17 year old debutant that we should not have failed to picked up, as he was on the field, was Leo Mercer at about 90 day older than Dan and Mark.

I was also asked who North West Mercenaries were ?

The Development Squad are playing them next weekend (I had thought it as last weekend).

I didn’t know, and a after bit of research I know little more apart from they are based in Cheadle Hume in Manchester, were set up in 2015, and are “the next big thing in amateur rugby union” according to their website – which has not been updated since September.

Do you know more ?

No one actually asked about this - I just spotted it over the weekend.

Of the 45 tries scored this season, 33 have come from the back division (73%).

In recent seasons it was 63 of 119 (52%), 53 of 106 (50%), 30 of 96 (31%), 25 of 60 (41%)

So much for boring forward rugby !

Top try scorers so far Zane with 8, Dini 6 and Glenn (W) 5.

Five players have appeared in all thirteen games. As normal Duncan and Liam, whose career totals are therefore still separated by just the one game, plus both Glenn’s and Dom.

Hopefully Glenn (C) and Dini can stay fit and available and make the magic twenty appearances for the club badges, after just missing out in the past. Glenn twice reaching nineteen season appearances.
