Still three months to go before the first fixture, but we already know what it is !

Looking at the opening sequence of games we should have a good idea what sort of season it will be by the end of September, as we start with four teams who will probably expect to finish around us. So do well and it could be a good season - struggle and it could be difficult.

We open with a repeat of last season, away at Ilkley and Kirkby, two grounds we have yet to win at in the league. Then come last season’s two promoted champions. Our opening game at the new Mintbridge last year was against one of our oldest rivals, Vale of Lune are our oldest rival, as they were Kendal’s first opponent almost 113 years ago, and have feature in the most games against us (169). The following week it is the opposite end of the scale. Our first ever (as far as I can see) visit to Alnwick, and only our second game. They were defeated 36v24 in a non League game at Mint Bridge in November 1994.

At this point things get tougher with last season’s runner up Hull, fourth place Lymm, and third placed Harrogate. In the last game before the clocks change, we visit Sandal. Will they have bounced back after their recent poor season ?

More tough games open November with the visit of Billingham to Mintbridge and a visit to Rossendale (although we have done fairly well there in the last two seasons), and Wirral come to Mintbridge (their ONLY away victory last season).

We then meet the other two new clubs. A visit to relegated Blaydon, our first meeting since the 2005/06 season, another ground I don’t think we have won at in the league, then Wilmslow, who despite being one of the best opposition in the three seasons before promotion, are one we had a very good record against with only one loss, and that was with a makeshift team at the end of first seasons.

This brings to an end the first set of fixtures, and whoever set them clearly has a sense of humour, as Kirkby open the second section, and again visit Mintbridge on the final game before Christmas. So their supporters will spend the Summer building periscopes to watch the game, whilst their medics will be stocking up on skin cream. I am sure we will all have our fingers crossed for a crisp sunny Winters day, and the main grass pitch to be playable – although by then the “problems” with the 3G may be solved.

Plenty to think about over the Summer. It will soon fly by (I hope !)
