Garry Holmes apperances, away wins at Kirkby, and who were Mike Scott and John Veevers

Obviously people had been storing up questions over the Summer for the first home game.

Garry Holmes
When he was coming off the field after a spell as a refreshment carrier, Garry asked when he would reach his 300th game, as he thought he was close.

I had a fear he was more than close, and we had missed it, as I had idea it was going to be at one of the early away games.

The answer turned out to be at Kirkby Lonsdale. So Saturday was game 301
In the current squad only Liam Hayton (368) and Chris Park (313) have made more appearances. The gap behind is a lot bigger, with only Glen Weightman (109) and Dini Noyo (101) in triple figures.

Garry made his debut in October 2003, as a substitute against Waterloo, but did not appear again until the start of the next season, and started a game for the first time against Longton in September 2004.

I think I have mentioned elsewhere that someone (could be Rob Quarry’s dad) once suggested to me Garry should be a wing, and I think he was pushed in to emergency duty there in a game at Darlington in April 2005, when we had a number of injuries to the back division during the game (my programme shows Liam Hayton came on as a substitute for Dan Stephens at outside half, but I doubt he played there). I had not however realised until doing some research, that Garry like all good Kendal back row men (Ben Dixon being the latest, and Chris Downham is also on the list) had started a game on the wing. Away at Chester in March 2007. I was not there so cannot report on how he did.

I was at Mint Bridge in April 2011 when he scored what I described in my memories of the old Mint Bridge as the most memorable (if not necessarily best) try, against Nuneaton – “a cross between Phil Bennett and Jason Robinson” in my memory.

This was just one of his 88 tries (so far) for the club, which puts him fourth in the list since the records I have began in 1950. I think this is the top try scorer for a forward, boosted by his 23 and 25 in consecutive seasons 2013/14 and 2014/15, which I think is only beaten by Lewis Boyd’s 31 (1989/90) and Jeremy Bills 26 (1989/90).

Kirkby Lonsdale
In his editor’s notes, Richard asked about wins at Kirkby Lonsdale.

This was the first in the League at the fifth attempt.

The last win there was in the last non-league game in April 1996 (17v24).

Prior to 2014, we had only lost once there in nine previous visits, 7v3 in 1922

This season’s result was the highest points total, and biggest winning margin, for either team. So games have always been close

Mike Scott
Mike appears to currently be coaching at Aspatria.

Despite only spending four seasons at Kendal he sits in fourth place for the highest points scored (855) in just 102 games. In his first three seasons he finished with 249, 294 and 241, and as far as I can see only Dan Stephens and Mark Ireland have passed 200 in a season in recent years.

After a spell away at Fylde he returned for a season, but only scored 71 points in 21 games – his opportunities will have been limited as that was Mark Ireland’s first season and he finished with 222 points.

Mike scored 42 points in a single game in the 92v0 win against West Hartlepool. He was playing fullback in that season, but moved to outside half during the game

Playing for Fylde he also prevented Kendal picking up their first win of the Centenary 2005/06 season. In March 2006, the team led 22v3 after half an hour, but he scored 17 of his team’s 22 points, including a penalty two minutes into injury time, to draw the game.

John Veevers
John’s son in law was at the game on Saturday

John played in the second row for the club in several periods in the seventies and early eighties, but also spent some time playing for other clubs (including Fylde ?).

He score 20 tries in his time at Kendal. A photo in the Centenary Book has him in mid-air, diving in to score.

Probably better know to those of us who are more recent supporters for his spell as touch judge. The Centenary book also lists his work as a Colts team coach.

If you have any questions on team stats please ask and I will try and do some digging.

Prior to 1986 appearances are sketchy (I am trying to fill in, but it is slow going, and will never be perfect), and I have nothing official before 1950, although again I am piecing something together from Gazette and other reports.

Equally if you have any statistical information (especially pre-1986) I would be keen to see it.
