Match Report

Kendal Auld Greys (Est 2018) took to the field for the first time on Saturday to demonstrate to the assembled partisan crowd the fun and prowess of walking rugby.
In October, Ivan Smith secured external funding which allowed the purchase of bibs- something to play in, balls- something to play with and cones- something to play within.
In the build up to the game, the Auld greys had gone through game plans (which part of the pitch will be playing on), what type of foot ware ( trainers, boots or walking shoes) and which changing room have we been allocated?
Although having strength in depth, the squad was short of some players due to trips to Lapland, Christmas shopping and on the day Susie Regan failed a late fitness test but was replaced by newcomer and debutante John Croasdale.
Before kick off, Mike Lambert lead the team briefing which ensured all knew where to place the cones, had the right coloured bib on and that the appropriate head protection was worn. (Santa or Elves).
Pumped and ready to rock the teams took to the pitch under floodlights which were doing their best to pierce the dark Kendal afternoon.

Referee John Hodson blew for the game to start with the RFU’s Northern Division Referees Assessor Brian Mitchelhill looking on from the stand. (as an aside, the assessor had never seen this form of the game before let alone the rules!). Craig “Ian Roberstson” Ross provided a running commentary with background music of When I’m 64 (The cheek of it!)
Four minutes into the game, Sir called for a TMO decision. The high tech score board was called into action (another first for the day) and “try given” was flashed up. More tries followed but who actually won is still being negotiated.
After 7 mins the game was called as the players from the days support match needed to come back on and complete the second half.

We hope all that saw the game enjoyed the fun as much as we did playing. If you want to join in, we meet Wednesday afternoons 2pm-3pm, with tea and chat afterwards.

They Can, Can you?
