Cold but fun return fixture for the U8's

The return fixture against our friends from Upper Eden proved to be another successful outing for our U8 players, braving the cold weather to put in some excellent team performances against an equally brave and determined Upper Eden team, returning with two wins and draw.

An earlier than normal start, and prospect of snow and ice on the route up to Kirkby Stephen didn’t put any of our players off, so to again be able to put out three teams (and subs) is a great achievement and good indicator of the team spirit within the squad. Thanks again to all the parents for making the effort; hopefully the early start means you would have had plenty of time to enjoy the wonderful sights of the Eden Valley after the game!

The highlight throughout the three games was the much improved defensive display, which just goes to show that our squad is taking on board what is asked of them during the training sessions. The last time we played Upper Eden we were unable to force a turnover of the ball as a result of them being tagged six times, on this occasion however; we managed to achieve this several times through a combination of better team work and communication in defence, and an improved individual attitude towards defending. Well done to everyone and in particular to Ben Owen, who was rightly awarded the Player of the Week. The fact that he was starting to lose his voice towards the end of the games just shows how much communicating and organising he was doing for his team.

With the squad possessing such good attacking talent, we’ll continue to look to improve our defence, but worthy mention from the main games covered by Rachel also go to Coen, Caleb & Alfie for holding their positions well, Logan, Ben & Iestyn running in good tries and Blake making great breaks as usual, literally too much good stuff to mention it all. Rachel particularly impressed by the keenness of everyone to get involved and showing good hunger to get their hands on the ball.

Very well done to everyone involved yesterday, I’m sure everyone will agree it was a great morning out, superbly hosted as always by our good friends at Upper Eden Rugby Club. For those not involved at Wigton next week, you can look forward to a well-deserved week off, before we head off for another return fixture; this time to Fylde. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Danny, Sara, Rachel and Wayne.
