Wasps do well to overcome tough challenge

A Cup game against Keswick, who are currently playing two Leagues lower than the Wasps, but with a seven wins from seven played League record, a team destined for promotion. The Wasps took the game seriously, with a team close to the one that had won against a strong challenge from Sefton last weekend.

Due to concerns about the state of the First team pitch, the game was moved to a 3.00pm kick off on the 3G, to allow a football game to be completed first, and kick off was further delayed by a late end to that game and the changes needed to switch the pitch from football to rugby.

The Wasps started well playing towards the river and took the lead after six minutes, when a good passing moved was finished by left wing Sarah Wilkinson. Tamar Benson added the conversion from a wide angle. 7v0

Sarah Wilkinson also added the second try after a quarter of an hour. She intercepted a Keswick pass, and then outpaced the defence, with Tamar Benson again adding the conversion. 14v0

Despite the scoreline Keswick were playing well, and had a lot of ball but like many teams before them were met with some tough tackling from the Wasps, but recycled the ball well.

The only other score of the half, came after half an hour from Claire Geldard, who the Keswick defence had previously done well to contain. 19v0.

The opening try of the second half, came after four minutes from Wasps No.8 Siobhan Lamb, who again showed given space, is very fast and difficult to stop. The conversion was added by scrum half Sioned Jones. 26v0.

Five minutes later Keswick finally got some reward for their efforts with a try from short range 26v5

The next score came after twenty minutes, when replacement wing Sophie Postlethwaite was on the end of a cross field passing moved, and for once given space, powered through for the score 31v5

Five minutes later Keswick got a second try 31v10

This score was quickly cancelled out, when for a second week, Wasps outside half Lorne Mellonie, anticipated a pass, as Keswick tried to run from close to their own line, and was through to intercept and score. Sioned Jones again adding the conversion. 38v10 with ten minutes to play.

The last ten minutes were almost all Keswick on the attack in the Wasps half, adding two converted tries for a final score of 38v24.

Keswick looked a strong well organised team. On the basis of this performance, if they go up, they will certainly not look out of place in the tough League the Wasps won last season, and could even have beaten some of the teams the Wasps have encountered this season.
