In the first league game of the new season, the Wasps welcomed Garstang to Mint Bridge who were playing in their first league game. The wasps welcomed five new players into the team making their competitive debuts and several players playing their first games in new positions.
The wasps scored early when quick turnover ball was punished and a couple of passes allowed Vanessa Temple to race clear of the cover and score under the posts. Abby Bland converted.
Garstang then had a period of pressure with their strong forwards taking the game to the Kendal pack. Some strong defence kept Garstang at bay and a strong scrum won against the head allowed Abby Bland to kick clear.
Kendal punished Garstang for not turning their pressure into points, when again Temple raced clear to score her second try of the game. Bland converting.
Kendal’s third try came from a well worked backs move which made space for Hayley Hodgson to finish strongly.
Just before half time Vanessa Temple completed her hat trick to bring the score to 28 nil at half time.
The second half started strongly for the Wasps with Hayley Hodgson adding her second try of the game. The Temple/Hodgson centre partnership looking very strong in their first game together.
The Wasps sixth try was a delight to watch and could already be a contender for try of the season at Mint Bridge this season! Great handling allowed Hodgson the space to make a 50 metre break downfield, the forwards in great support offloaded well before the ball was moved across the full width of the pitch allowing Harriet Metcalfe to finish the move excellently in the corner. Vanessa Temple added her fourth try of the game not long after, which she converted herself.
The Wasps introduced four substitutes meaning there was no let up in the performance, playing some delightful fast flowing rugby which pleased the large crowd. The final score coming from Amy Beard, who was excellent throughout the game, Beard breaking from a scrum and handing off several tacklers on her way to the line. Abby bland added the difficult conversion to finish off a good day for the Wasps.
Special mentions to Kirsty Ranson, Kerry Proctor and Tammy Brocklebank who performed very well.
Some great tries and a clean sheet against a Garstang team that will do very well in their first league season, but still plenty to work on for the Wasps before a challenging game at Sefton on Sunday.
