On a perfect day for rugby...

On a perfect day for rugby, the Wasps welcomed Southport to Mint Bridge looking to go top of the league table.

The game started at a fast pace with both sets of forwards getting stuck into each other, with some early Kendal breaks being let down by the final pass.
Kendal opened the scoring through full back Sarah Simpson, who hit the line at speed to break through the defence.

Kendal were having to work very hard to make ground as the Southport defence was very strong, a spell of pressure resulted in tries for Hayley Hodgson and Vanessa Temple putting the Wasps in control of the game.

Southport kept coming back at the Wasps and were proving hard to handle in the forwards in particular but the Kendal defence was holding out. Just before half time Vanessa Temple added her second try of the game and that brought the half time score to 24 nil.

The second half brought plenty of changes to the Wasps team but the second half started in usual fashion with an early Wasps try, Abby Bland breaking through the line and throwing a dummy Chris Park would be proud of to beat the full back.
Vanessa Temple then completed her hat trick to take her to 31 tries this season, surely the club try scoring record beckons this year!

Southport wouldn’t give up and kept coming back strongly and they got a well deserved try from their scrum half, who as usual was excellent throughout the game.

The Southport try woke the Wasps up and further tries were added by Sarah Simpson and Hayley Hodgson completed her first hat trick for Kendal, Hodgson’s strong running caused problems for Southport the whole match.

The game nearly ended with a wonder try from Emily Knowles, who beat several players on a run that nearly took her the full length of the pitch but sadly she was bundled into touch near the line.

The whistle went for the full time and the Wasps remain unbeaten with a 55 -5 victory and this takes them four points clear at the top of the league. The Wasps send their best wishes to the Southport player who was taken to hospital with a neck injury and hope she recovers soon.

Forward of the match went to Laura Mason, who was strong in both attack and defence and Sarah Simpson was back of the match for another excellent display at full back.

The Wasps are at home again on Sunday 22nd February against Leigh, 2pm kick off. Please come along and support the Wasps on their quest for league glory
