The Wasps welcomed Sefton to Mint Bridge looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Sefton have had a very good start to their first league season so the Wasps knew they would be up for the game.
Kendal started the game strongly and took play into the Sefton half, after a spell of pressure Nessa Temple made the break and offloaded to Abby Bland who ran in under the posts. Bland added the conversion for an early 7 nil lead.
The game was a very tight battle with defences strong on both sides, the strong running Sefton backs and their lively scrum half constantly keeping the Wasps on their toes. One Sefton break through the middle was stopped by excellent cover defence from Fleur Stanton and Emma Rowlinson.
After being under pressure in their own half, the Wasps scored through a trademark Nessa Temple break. Temple beat three defenders on the way to the line scoring her 15th try of the season.
The Wasps created several half chances towards the end of the first half but final passes didn’t come off. Just before the half time break turnover ball was secured and the ball spread wide for Hayley Hodgson to break the line and beat the cover defence for an excellent try. This brought the half time score to 17 nil.
The second half was a very physical affair with no backward steps taken from either side. The visitor’s plans to disrupt the Wasps game were a cause of frustration and the game threatened to boil over on a couple of occasions.
Despite this, the Wasps remained in control and despite not adding to their score they never looked like being broken in defence.
A very entertaining game and the toughest test for the Wasps so far this season, Hayley Dixon was forward of the match and Hayley Hodgson was back of the match.
The Wasps next fixture is away to Southport on Sunday 7th December, another tough test as Southport have started the season very well.
