A first game in their new League, and a big win, but like the First XV twenty four hours earlier, plenty of room for improvement.
The first half saw Crewe & Nantwich probably having eighty to ninety percent of the ball, but hardly leaving their half, spending a lot of that time trapped in their twenty two finding no escape from the Wasps solid defence.
Crewe & Nantwich had the ball for most of the first ten minutes, but when a chance came the Wasps took it with Hayley Hodgson, playing at fullback, scoring 5v0.
The second try came shortly after with Sarah Wilkinson going over after good work by Hayley Hodgson and Clare Geldard. Tamar Benson added the conversion 12v0.
The final score of the half was a second for Hayley Hodgson, started by a good run from Amber Byers on the left followed by good runs from Tamar Benson and Sarah Wilkinson. 17v0
At half time the Wasps changed their half backs with Holly Howard going to scrum half and wing Ash Hendrie (?) going to outside half. Both did well, but the normal pairing of Cath Sewell and Lorne Mellonie were both back by the end of the game.
The Wasps opened the scoring in the second half with a good run from a forward to power over 22v0
Whilst the Wasps were getting more ball, Crewe & Nantwich were gaining more territory and stretching the Wasps defence, and after twenty minutes after a number of team warnings, Sarah Wilkinson was singled out for a yellow card.
Shortly afterwards Crewe & Nantwich got their opening try 22v5.
Sarah Wilkinson seemed to return much quicker than the ten minutes, and the rest had clearly done her good, as shortly afterwards she powered down the right wing for a try, which Tamar Benson converted 27v5.
The next try was another for Hayley Hodgson following passes from Clare Geldard and Lorne Mellonie 34v5
The final try came from Claire Geldard, after Hayley Hodgson had taken the ball to the line before being stopped. 39v5
* The Final score on the scoreboard was 41v5, so either I missed a conversion, or it gave one that was missed.
Plenty to work on in attack, with a number of poor passes or passes spilled, but in defence the Wasps were rock solid, and when their chances came the Wasps took them.
Next weekend the Wasps have their first away game travelling to the North East and Driffield. Their next game at Mint Bridge is Sunday 8th October when Harrogate are the visitors.
