Top of the pile

Aldwinians inflicted our only loss - at home - early in the season and the lads knew this was going to be a make or break game for the league title with then just 2 games remaining for Kendal and 1 for Aldwinians.
Kendal made a few changes for this game, with the match coming at the start of half term for us, but also a few players also missing through illness and injury. However, we are fortunate that selection is always a headache and no matter who starts, or finishes, every player gives their all and our team is never weakened.
We knew that we wanted to try and get the scoreboard ticking over if we could, but early on, despite making a few chances, we were forcing plays, leading to some handling errors. A penalty in 7 mins was calmly slotted over by Charlie to settle some nerves though. Aldwinians grabbed the lead just 5 mins later with a well worked try, but two converted tries in 4 minutes in the middle of the half - a long reach by Johnny and a drive by Harley took us to a 10 point lead. It wasn't going all our own way though, with a line out to 1 giving Aldwinians the momentum to score with about 5 mins left of the half. We then missed a penalty just before the Isaac breezed over in the last play of the half, which Charlie converted for a 14-24 interval lead.
In the second half, after an early penalty for Aldwinians, some great work put Isaac in for his second and Idris finished one for us to go 17-36 and it seemed the lads were cruising. However, Aldwinians had lots of pride and heart and kept coming at us - keeping the ball in hands and going through multiple phases. Despite some excellent defence by Kendal, we started gifting some penalties to hand advantage to Aldwinians, who scored two late tries in fairly quick succession to make the score 31-36. The last couple of minutes became rather stressful for all those who travelled from Kendal! Thankfully we held out to take a great win against a very good side.

Two games left - a win at home to Tyldesley this Sun 18th will see us confirmed as league winners with one game remaining. Come and watch!
