The boys, bolstered by breakfast at No8, boarded the bus and headed to TMV in high spirits due to their excellent form so far, with even injured lads like Chris and Johnny coming to watch.
The opposition however, had other ideas. Despite Kendal making a fairly bright start, spreading the ball wide to get Cam and Riley involved, there was some poor decision making, which TMV capitalised on and opened the scoring through a penalty. It took till the 21st min for Kendal to get off the mark – Harley picking up the ball from the back of the scrum and barrelling over from close range, though the conversion was missed. Five minutes later, after another scrum near touch in TMV territory, the lads quickly shifted the ball to the opposite side for Riley to dot down, with Charlie adding the extras. That wasn’t the end of the first half action though as TMV had a number of phases on the Kendal line, which they eventually took and added the kick to make it only a 2 point lead to Kendal at the break.
The lads were challenged to up their standards for the second half and they came out with purpose. The forwards took control and just a few minutes in to the 2nd half, Joseph grounded the ball from the back of a maul with Charlie kicking the points. Soon after that the heavy rain, that had been threatening, arrived and duly turned the game into a scrappy affair. It wasn’t until it stopped twenty odd minutes later, that Harley copied his feat from the first half: running hard and straight from the back of the scrum through a tiring defence. Charlie added the kick and then a few mins later made a break of his own, diving over the line and adding the extras.
This is back-to-back games that the lads have kept the opposition scoreless in the 2nd half, which is a testament to the work the coaches put in on the training field on fitness as well as skills during the week.
There is now a well-deserved week off, followed by Aldwinians coming to Kendal in a meeting of the only two teams in the league still undefeated. See you there!
