Still not at all sure what a “Structured Training Session” (STS) is – or that all the players were convinced either, but hopefully both sets of coaches got what they wanted out of it.

================================================

Initially the idea seemed to be that Kendal had all of the ball in the first session, and got the put in to all scrums and line outs, then in the second session, Penrith had the ball, and the choice of the restart – scrum / line out etc.

After “half time” it seemed to be more like a normal game – although Penrith seemed to get all the decisions, so again it was mostly an exercise in defending for Kendal and attacking for Penrith. As Penrith did not add to their score, that was probably a home win.

The final result (if you can have a result in a STS) was two tries to Kendal and one to Penrith.

Penrith scoring in their first session of possession, then new Kendal second row/back row man John Dervey, who again looked as if he could be a very useful addition, was loitering on the wing when the ball came wide, and went over in the corner.

The second try came from a Kendal attack, where Damian Armstrong joined the line at speed in the centre, to go over for a try.

Whilst too little was seen of it (mainly as Penrith had the majority of the ball) the back division looked sharp and if the ball is moved quickly, rather than getting held up in midfield, they could start to test defences again this season.

Not sure if the “STS” had anything to do with the strange numbering, but sadly Glenn did not appear as a scrum half, Damian at outside half or James in the Centre – but all three did well in their more normal positions.

It was a bit of a Kendal old boys reunion with a Penrith coaching team including Dave Preston, Ian Thompson and Ian Voortman.

The action starts for real at Mint Bridge on Saturday 3 September against Hull – which will definitely not be a “STS”
