A battling performance against a top quality team

Forget the scoreline, this was a much better performance than against Carlisle, and possibly than their earlier home win against York, but in league leaders Bishop Auckland, the Wasps came up against a really strong team.

Bishop Auckland came into the game with six wins from six, having scored 307 points and conceded just 35 points, and showed why.

The Wasps worked hard in defence, and whilst they never threatened a score of their own, there was some great work with ball in hand by both backs and forwards, especially in the second half, which showed how far the team have improved this season.

Bishop Auckland opened the scoring after seven minutes then their No.8 picking up from the base of a dominant scrum to go over. Their outside half added the conversion from wide out.

A penalty in mid-field from a Kendal scrum offence increased the gap to 0v10 after thirteen minutes.

Three minutes later from another attacking scrum, the right wing was tackled, but got a pass away to the centre, who had looped around for the try. 0v15.

At this point it looked as if the Wasps were in for a long afternoon, but they dug in and solid tacking kept the score down until half an hour, with a second try from the No.8, after the Wasps had been driven off their own ball at the scrum. 0v20. This was the last score of the half.

An interesting tactic from the visitors was the effective use of kicks into space to turn the Kendal defence, although none directly led to scores.

Five minutes into the second half the lead was increased, when a prop appeared at pace to take a pass and burst through for a score which was converted. 0v32

Without ever threatening a score the Wasps came more into the game as the half went on and there were a number of powerful runs by forwards making ground, and when the ball was spread there were breaks from the back division, but the defence was far too strong and well organised for the Wasps to get away.

Bishop Auckland scored again on the half hour, when the Kendal defence ran out of tacklers 0v34 with the conversion. The final try came on the end of normal time, by when the Wasps had re-organised their back division, with players in a different positions than they started the game, and a Bishop Auckland player evaded a number of tackles to score 0v39.

Despite the scoreline there was little more that the Wasps could have done in attack or defence against what appeared to be a very well organised team, with some good players.

The next home game for the Wasps is Wetherby on Sunday 9th December
