With 8 teams between Kendal and Fylde and lots of Subs we had some fantastic matches.

For the parents: From my point of view (Ian, the big guy in the red jacket) the 8 Hornets that Stu and I looked after for the 4 matches against Fylde impressed me on a couple of levels.
Firstly the weather was terrible and the pitches sodden. At first it seems like fun to slide around a bit but it soon dawned on the players that it was going to be a cold and muddy morning. Cold and muddy translates into hard work and showing the determination to keep running and playing and all of the players did just that. All of my Hornets should feel proud that they stuck it out to the end and proved to me, themselves and the watching parents and friends that they have the character to play the game no matter what.
Secondly Fylde are a quality squad of players. It is playing against squads like Fylde that will bring on the Kendal U9’s in leaps and bounds as they see a similar or better standard of play from an opposition that don’t back down and play good attacking rugby. We get a lot out of our normal training sessions but taking part in mini tournaments like this are invaluable. Again, even though sometimes my team seemed to be against a seemingly superior team they never stopped running and tackling so again well done to all of them.
For the players: First of all apologies for not knowing all of your names! I’m new to this squad and trying to learn them as quickly as possible.
We managed to squeeze in 4 games amongst the rain and minutes well observed silence (thanks to all!). Kendal for the first game and a half seemed a little nervous of getting involved and Fylde took the initiative and ran in a number of tries. Midway through the second game something clicked within my squad and suddenly they started to put in some great tackles, especially by Joseph who tackled as hard as I have seen any of the U9’s so far this season. Also Jack discovered the value of running a straight line though the Fylde ranks as he ran in a number of tries. This really pleased me to see what we have been coaching for a number of weeks being put into practice and the rest of the team took heart and upped their games to match.
The team also began to look for support from their team mates and to organise themselves when the direction of play changed. These are all things that the U9 coaches have been hammering at our training sessions so keep it up! There were notable efforts from William, Declan and Josh and a great display of determination to carry on playing, despite being soaked and having the coldest hands ever from Idris!
I hope you all enjoyed the experience. The whole team deserve a pat on the back as do the parents for turning out and watching on a really awful day…See you all for training next Sunday!
