What a difference a day makes ! Saturday saw us training in warmth and sunshine, Sunday saw us looking for our wellies.

What a difference a day makes ! Saturday saw us training in warmth and sunshine, Sunday saw us looking for our wellies.

After a few short games of various rules Bulldogs, we set ourselves up around an Auckland Grid and set into a few exercises that were all about coordination, balance, speed and spatial awareness. Each cycle had a slight variation to it that challenged the players to adapt to their change in circumstances.

After a drinks break, we split down into 3 groups and each group, with each group focussing on 2V1 handling, rucking and tackling. We had about 10 minutes with each group and then the groups rotated around. I had the tackling group and it was great to see so many one on one tussles – with the tacklee being determined to not make things easy for the tackler. Everyone took to it with gusto, but a special mention needs to be made of the Snowplough Vs Noodles matchup and one particular tackle from Bobster on The Rock. Really good body positioning, allied to a grim determination to succeed. Most of the 1 V 1’s were very closely matched, with the players trying various methods to come out on top (Viper holding on for all that he wasw worth, whilst Freerunner stretching out his arm ground the ball for the ‘try’.

The plan was then to all come together again and have some small sided games, but alas the weather conspired against us. By now we had patches of fairly deep standing water, cold and wet players and a set of adults who all looked like they had had a hosepipe turned onto them. So, discretion being the better part of valour, we called an early end to the session and went inside to indulge in Gillians bacon butties.

On a lousy day for weather, it was a really pleasant surprise to be able to go inside and talk to Dan Baines and Will Addison from Sale Sharks. Dan started playing his rugby at Vale of Lune, whilst Will started off playing for Upper Eden U8’s. For the players to be able to talk to 2 professional rugby players from our locale was priceless and it was a positive experience to talk to both of them.

Paul

p.s. I big welcome to the two players who came to join us for their first session -- and who stayed to the end despite the weather. 10/10 guys. Hopefully we can have a better session next week, weather permitting.
