A bare 15 Kendal Colts side welcomed Newcastle (Staffs) to Mintbridge for today’s cup fixture

Player unavailability through injuries and other commitments, such as DoE Silver Expedition weekend, caused havoc with normal selection, with SEVEN (yes 7) players missing. The juggling act was as follows: Casey Morris remained at scrum half, Harry Towler slipped in at full back with James Seaton going to 8, Samuel Coleman went to 10, Cory Livesey at 6 and Jake Dixon at 2...

Kendal kicked off into the wind towards the Shap Road.
Kendal exerted pressure on the Newcastle defence right from the whistle, but a knock on relieved the pressure. Newcastle started coming into the game but Kendal's defence stood strong. An unforced penalty gave Newcastle a 'tap and go' which saw them cross the line for their 1st try (converted).
0 v 7

The Kendal lads went straight back at their opponents, eventually winning a penalty which Samuel Coleman converted.
3 v 7

The Colts showed that they were up for this game, against a team from a higher division. Great forward play resulted in a 'tap and go' penalty for Kendal with the charging Owen Slater crossing the try line (unconverted).
8 v 7

Both teams seemed to be cancelling each other out until Jake Holladay made a break down the right wing, only to be held-up short.
Half time: Kendal 8 v Newcastle 7

Kendal started the 2nd half the better with great interplay and Fraser Fletcher trying to convert his mazy runs on the wing. An early Newcastle scrum saw the ball recycled and for them to cross the line for their 2nd converted score of the day.
8 v 14

The lads heads didn’t drop and they played some good rugby, but it was Newcastle who crossed the line again for another converted try.
8 v 21

Kendal again pushed forward, but without any replacements, it was inevitable that the lads would start to tire and with Newcastle playing some good running rugby it was they that went over next for their 4th converted try.
8 v 28

Newcastle were then reduced to 14 for the last few minutes but there was still time for them to run in a 5th try (unconverted).
8 v 33
Full time: Kendal 8 v Newcastle 33

The main thing I have to say is that today’s scoreline doesn’t reflect the effort and commitment the lads put in. Again, for me, a pleasure to watch a developing squad and great team effort by all.

Well that was the final game of what has been a great season both on and off the pitch, seeing the development of the lads as individuals and team players.

A massive thanks to the coaches Woody, Nige, Possie and John for all the hard work and time you have given this season to the lads. (Think only a few fines for being elsewhere)

A huge thank you to the families, friends and supporters who make Sunday’s special.
