Match report from today's U17 Colts HOME match v Rossendale Rugby Club.
Just before kick-off Kendal learned that their captain Alex Ryder had a late call up to represent the County u18's for the third time this season. To his and the club's credit, Alex is playing up an age group at County level!
Another key player, fiery back row Owen Singleton was unavailable through illness.
Rossendale turned up with a bare 15 players against a full Kendal squad of 20. Kendal kicked off with the wind at their backs playing towards the river. It wasn't long before Kendal showed their intent, with James Seaton leaping like a salmon to steal the Rossendale line-out ball, pop the ball to the front of the lineout for Corey Livesey to force his way over for the first score. The try was converted from out wide by Will Coxon 7-0.
From the kick off, Kendal caught the ball and drove forward, then a Sharpe pass was delivered to 'The Hairy Monster' Nathan Wilson, who nipped in from his wing for another try. Another conversion was slotted over by Will Coxon 14 -0.
Once again straight from the kick off it was to and fro with Rossendale trying to break the Kendal line. Kendal regained the ball and Will Coxon made a break to score on the left-hand side, this time unable to convert his own try with his left foot 19 - 0. From the restart Kendal forced their way down the club house touchline with some lovely light hands and inter-passing, only for James Seaton to be deemed to be held up over the line. From the resulting scrum the ball was popped to the right from scrum-half Casey Morris to the 'Charging Rhino' Bradley Butterworth, who stampeded his way over for another try!
Will Coxon added to his conversions for 26 - 0. Just before the half time whistle, Kendal wing Tom McDonald raced over for his first Kendal try. Half time 31 - 0.
Soon after the second half started, Rossendale added to their injury woes with their second player having to leave the pitch through injury. Kendal then had to drop to 14 players. Rossendale capitalised on the confusion that followed and were able to pounce first and score a converted try in the bottom right hand corner 31 - 07.
Jim O'Reilly then made a lovely break from his own 22 and managed to race the rest of the field to score an unconverted try 36 - 7. Owen slater was the next to rumble over and earn another Chinese from his dad for a Will Coxon converted try 43 - 7.
From the restart Kendal forwards caught the ball and recycled well for the ball to be fed to Sam Coleman, who broke a few tackles and raced through to score his first Kendal try again converted by Will Coxon 50 - 07.
It was the Brave Rossendale who scored the final points of the game, keeping their composure to score an unconverted try.
Final score: Kendal 50 - 12 Rossendale
