The first pre-season matched proved a entertaining run out, with the two new centres in particular impressing.

North Ribblesdale had the better of the opening ten minutes and looked as if they were about to open the scoring, when awarded a scrum on the Kendal line, but the Kendal pack carried on from where they had left off last year, and stole the ball.

Kendal then upped their pace, and with their first visit to the opposition half, opened the scoring when Matty Houghton, who played the whole game on the left wing, burst through after good work by the forwards. Despite still having plenty to do he somehow beat a number of defenders to touch down with Chris Park converting.

Ribblesdale squandered another chance before the second Kendal score, when despite having a three man overlap, with just Matty Houghton in defence, they overcomplicated the move and the opportunity was lost.

The second Kendal try came with a powerful break through the centre, again converted by Chris Park. The third try came shortly after with a good run down the right by Matty Houghton, setting up a position for Glenn Weightman to weave through for the try.

Ribblesdale seemed to have their opening try, after Kendal were caught by a quickly taken penalty, but again they failed to score.

The final score of the half came with the Kendal pack rumbling to the line for the touchdown after a penalty set up a lineout. 28v0 at the break

Another powerful run through the centre set up the first try of the second half, and saw the first if only two failed conversions.

As the game progressed Kendal brought their six substitutes on, and lost some momentum, spending much time defending, but still added four more tries to one, with two to Matty Houghton, one for new centre Danny Barker, who looked strong in attack and defence, and the final try from Chris Park.

Liam Hayton and Rob Wightman had good games both in the lineout and the loose, whilst there should again be competition for the back row places.

Plenty of positives to build upon with the team looking sharper both in attack and defence.

The forecast heavy rain held off until after the final whistle.

Next game Bradford & Bingley at Mint Bridge on Saturday 22nd.

Sorry to those I mislead with the scoring – my adding up went astray in both halves - but I think it was nine tries with seven converted
