20v7 early in the second half the team looked to be heading for victory, but after that rarely touching the ball and a backs to the wall defensive display just fell short, with Scarborough taking the lead three minutes from the end

The teams met for only the second time, with the first encounter having been over 33 years ago.

It was a much changed Kendal team that took the field, with six players coming in plus three positional changes, including both Ben Dixon and Alistair Thompson featuring in the back division. Kris Bratton was back from holiday but last week’s Man of the Match Greg Wrathall was unavailable, so Liam Hayton came in. Rory Blakeney-Edwards, who had been at Broughton Park last season, made his debut on the right wing.

There was a strong crosswind blowing towards the river end away from the club house, which Kendal had on their backs in the first half, but at times it caused as many problems as benefits.

Kendal had the better of the opening exchanges and had the lead after five minutes. Dini Noyo made a break down the left wing from close to halfway, he found John Dervey in support who made ground, but instead of going for the line himself, timed a return pass perfectly to Dini, who powered to the line. Glen Weightman judged the difficult wind perfectly to add the conversion. 7v0.

Dini Noyo was soon back in the action intercepting Scarborough ball and making a break, but was isolated and lost the ball in the tackle.

Kendal had to make a change after just ten minutes when Liam Hayton was forced off, to be replaced by Josh Chaplow. Later on the touchline it was suggested Liam’s run of bad injuries had continued, as it was a snapped achilles tendon.

Scarborough pulled level after twenty minutes. After good build up play, held out only by a solid Kendal defence, a kick through seemed to go loose, but this was to Scarborough’s advantage as flanker Ewan Govier was first to the ball as it crossed the line, and whilst there was doubt about whether he got downward pressure, the referee was happy. The easy conversion was added. 7v7

Kendal had the lead back five minutes later. The rather fussy referee, who awarded a lot of penalties against both teams throughout the game, adjudged a Kris Bratton run to have been stopped by a high tackle, and Glen Weightman again judged the wind perfectly. 10v7

There was a good run out of defence by Robbie Collinson, but he was stopped near halfway and Kendal were penalised.

When Scarborough went for a long touch from a penalty, Ben Dixon, playing on the left wing gathered it and made a good run out of defence. When he was stopped the ball was moved to Kris Bratton, but again his run was ended by a high tackle.

Whilst Kendal were defending well, the pack were failing to then challenge for the ball, allowing Scarborough to easily recycle, but when Jack Lashley went in for one, he easily plucked the ball back to set up a counter attack.

With five minutes of the half to play, after good build up play, Kendal were awarded another penalty which Glen Weightman converted, ending with four out of five successful kicks at goal, on a day which was not easy for kickers due to the wind. His one unsuccessful attempt came before the end of the half, so Kendal had to be satisfied with a 13v7 half time lead.

Kendal again started the half well, and extended their lead after five minutes. From an attacking scrum, the ball came to Kris Bratton, who managed to weave through the defence and whilst stopped on the line, got the ball away, to be gathered in mid air by Dini Noyo, to dive in for the try. Glen Weightman added the conversion. 20v7.

Kendal made a change with a slimline Glenn Chesher making his first appearance for over a year, replacing Dane Blenkharn in the front row.

Kendal were forced into a long period of defence, with the strong Scarborough pack keeping the ball through multiple phases. With Scarborough now well on top in the scrum, so there was a let off when after the Kendal pack were penalised at a scrum, Scarborough chose to go for a re-scrum. Their pack seemed to be on the way to driving Kendal over the line for a try, when the ball came out. As the ball was moved wide, Dini Noyo, who after a quiet afternoon at Durham, was back closer to his best, intercepted and made a break to halfway, but the ball was again lost.

After twenty minutes there was a blow for the Kendal defence as it was reduced to fourteen men, when John Dervey was yellow carded, after the referee adjudged him to have held back a Scarborough player. There was another blow shortly afterwards when Jack Lashley, who had needed several sets of treatment was finally forced off, so Dane Blenkharn returned.

After conceding a number of penalties at the scrum, Kendal offended again as Scarborough drove for the line resulting in a penalty try 20v14, with quarter of an hour still to play.

Just after the half an hour, Kendal were down to thirteen men, when Dane Blenkharn was yellow carded for failing to roll away at a ruck, although it was unfortunate that the referee had failed to spot in the build-up, a Scarborough player running across the Kendal defence, to block tackles on the player with ball.

With one prop injured and a second in the bin, the game went to uncontested scrums, but Kendal had to add a back to the pack, which saw Ben Dixon re-join the forwards. This made no difference to Scarborough who worked a move from the scrum which saw their scrum half Jordan Wakeham find a big gap to go through for the score, to bring his team within the point, but the jubilation was short lived as the conversion failed, to keep Kendal in a narrow lead with six minutes to play. 20v19.

Kendal made a change with Jordan Johnson coming on for Dan Greenwood, with Ben Dixon staying in his more accustomed spot in the back row, and Dini Noyo going onto the left wing.

With Scarborough now well on top, they came back and a good run by outside centre Aaron Wilson delivered the scoring pass to outside half Tom Radcliffe to take the lead for the first time with just two minutes of normal time to play. 20v26

Kris Bratton was forced off with a cut, meaning Dan Greenwood temporarily returned before a bandaged Bratton returned.

Kendal went looking for the winning score, but Scarborough looked as likely to score again and taking away the Kendal losing bonus point, but they just held out for the win.

After three big defeats this was a much improved performance, and it took near faultless play from the Scarborough pack to get the win. Whilst there could have been a few complaints if Kendal had held out for the win, the strong second half performance probably edged it for Scarborough.

Whilst Kendal had much more threat in their back division, upfront, especially as the game went on, they were no match for Scarborough, who were able to control the second half, slowing it down, to give their burly pack breathing space they did not have in the first half, and giving Kendal vey little possession in the final half hour to mount any attack.

There were plenty of positives for Kendal. Dini Noyo and Kris Bratton looking threatening with ball in hand, whilst Joe Lashley and Dane Blenkharn played well, and Robbie Collinson had his best game for some time.

So hopefully the first forward step, as the team makes the long trip to Driffield next weekend.

Your KENDAL MAN OF THE MATCH : Dini Noyo
Two tries, the second a particularly spectacular finish, a constant threat in the first half, and even providing one of the few moments of respite in the last half hour, with a break out of defence, Dini the overwhelming chose of most with 40% of the votes, although eleven others got at least one vote (some thanks to some of their Mums ?).
