Answering some questions from Saturday – plus an unexpected answer to a question not even posed, only stumbled upon when answering one of them

Richard suggested in his editorial, that this was a “rare visit” for Cleckheaton

I think it was just their fifth visit, and Kendal’s fourth win
1933/34 18v6
2004/05 30v27
2005/06 12v42
2007/08 31v15
2016/17 22v5

Will they be back again next year ? Let’s hope we can help them next weekend. They sit two point (not one as incorrectly shown on the League table on the website) clear of Morley (despite their losing bonus point on Saturday) and one ahead of Doncaster Phoenix – and have the best point’s difference of the three - if that is the next factor.

On the touchline, there was a suggestion that our starting back row combination of Joe and Blake Robinson and Chris Downham were at school together. Could it be true ?

Whilst I cannot be sure which school they went to, they certainly appear to have been in the same school year, Chris and Blake were born within ten days of each other, but Joe is a bit younger.

The 2003/04 secondary school intake was a good one for Kendal rugby. As well as the three above, Alistair Thompson, Mark Carruthers, Robbie Collinson, James Thompson, Leo Mercer (the last three born within four days of each other in late February – so watch out for birthday celebrations next weekend), Dan Lowther, Josh Chaplow and Jack Lashley, were all in the same school year.

Ben Leacock and Matty Houghton would have been just too old by seven and three days.

Difficult to imagine Ben being one of the smallest in his year.

In the Player Profile, Richard said Liam Hayton wants to be playing at forty (and the way he is playing suggests that is certainly possible !), and wants to make 400 appearances (hopefully not stopping there).

Richard suggested he may have to do the one to achieve the other. A check of the stats’ says he may make it by his thirty-eighth birthday (form and fitness allowing), based on his normal average of around 25 games a season.

This is where I stumbled upon the unexpected stat’ that I should have already spotted but had missed – until now.

Liam and Duncan Green are locked together in the appearances chart, so should they both run out next weekend they will be making (if my stats’ are right) their 350th appearances. It is always a worry when Duncan goes off as he, like Liam, is so rarely injured, but hopefully it will not be too serious.

So with seven games to go of this season, they may pass Paul Dodds’ 379 next season, but Liam will need to play until he is 40 to catch Richard Harryman 451, or Billy Coxon 461.

Also in line for a landmark next weekend (which I did know, but was not going to mention until the team was selected) are the cornerstones of the pack Glenn and Dom, who should make their twentieth appearances of the season, which marks winning their club badges. It will be Dom’s 34th appearance for Kendal over three seasons, but Glenn will be playing his 84 game in his fifth season, after twice getting stranded on 19 games, and once on 17, whilst a serious injury ended his season early in the 2012/13 season.

Dini is also closing in on the twenty game mark for the first time, after not being completing a full season in his previous three seasons here.

Enough stats’ I’m off to try to think of something new to write for Richard’s End of an Era Souvenir Programme.
