Vale’s pack were much bigger than Kendal’s and used this size advantage well to race out to 14-0 in the first 20 mins with their set piece dominance and Kendal ill-discipline at the breakdown allowing them to make easy yards. This remained the score at half time and a further two tries in the early part of the second half for Vale, both the result of good fortune with a bouncing ball, allowed them to extend their lead to 26-0.
The scoreline didn’t reflect the game however, as Kendal were making good yards with ball in hand, but were thwarted by several last ditch tackles out wide. This pressure and persistence from Kendal eventually led to their first try on 64 minutes, following a series of forward drives in the opposition 22, Dan Reid popped up on the blind side to crash over, which was converted 26-7. An indication of Kendal’s continued threat to the game was seen a couple of minutes later when Vale opted for a shot at goal from a penalty to take the score out to 29-7.
The tiring Vale forwards were now struggling to maintain the Kendal team who were putting together much better organised phases of play which led to their second try on 75 mins, which again came from good recycled possession in the Vale 22 before taking advantage of an overlap out wide for Joe Cook to score; 29-12.
Almost immediately from the re-start, Kendal were back on the attack following a good break out of the 22 by Josh Chaplow. This took Kendal back into Vale’s half and again, well organised phase play, allowed Grant Parker to crash over for a try out wide; 29-17.
Kendal were now looking to repeat that exit from their 22 and look for the bonus points score but when the ball was lost into touch, the ref blew for full time (a few minutes early) and denied the opportunity of those bonus points.
Several positives to take from the game as well as several areas to work on ahead of next week’s game against Sandbach, who are currently top of the table following two comfortable home wins from their first two games followed by an away defeat to Birkenhead. Kendal will be hoping to field an even stronger team this week and put on a more complete performance to beat the early league leaders.
