Good teamwork from the squad. Good try from Dan Reid, improving prop.

Kendal 24 Moresby 7

Apologies to the reader, but the tardy match report was due to the weather and a trip to sort out a rather nasty bout of trench foot!

Moresby were the visitors to Mint Bridge on the least clement of days, to play the league's in form team.

A handy toss to win by skipper Rob Wightman, saw Kendal playing with the gale and hail at their backs, against a team who love to throw the ball about, and put in really big hits! A mishap from kick off saw Kendal have a scrum, and after a dominant shove, young Rob Chaplow picked up, and yet once more showed a turn of pace to leave defenders grasping at shadows to ghost over for a try, with Matt Kaye adding the extras. 7 0.
The Kendal forward pack then systematically set about dismantling the larger visiting pack in the scrummage and lineout, as well as at the breakdown, with some quality work collectively. The omnipresent Blenkharn at breakdown leaving everybody yet once more attempting to remember his christian name! With the arm wrestle up front really only going one way, Rob Collinson belied the conditions with a throw of absolute quality, and Kendal set up a driving maul at around the halfway line. With young Blenkharn in the comfort of the driving seat of the maul, fantastic technique, body positions, and the odd back or two joining in, brought a tear of joy to the aficionado of forward play, as the maul crossed the line from 50 yards. Tommy Whitehead cheerily dotted the ball down near the posts, to reward his performance.
This was possibly the longest 20 minutes in history (sorry mate, my sundial wasn't working), and the Kendal father figure retreated to the half way still continuing to urge more effort from his young charges! Kaye again slotting the extras!
Kick off saw another reclaim, and off the Kendal team went again. Clever lines of running from the midfield duo of Mercer and Wilson, imperious against their much vaunted opposition, causing plenty of problems, and breaks, for the back 3 of Cottam, Knowles and Pashley to run off, only the extremely adverse weather conditions stopped the points from flowing!
After Garnett had worked the side into the opposition 22, an unluckly knock on ( the poor ref as well as the rest of us couldn't see through the hail by now) saw a defensive scrum to Moresby. The Kendal front 5 of Lashley, Collinson, Reid, Wightman and Evans yet once more took the ball against the head ( they only won one clean all day) and the ever !) the powerful running of Chaplow surged the home side into the opposition 5 metre area. With quick ball recycled, the ever low running Reid battered his way over for a popular score ( from his team and fans, not theirs!). They took a 19 0 lead at the half, and no real defending to be done.
Moresby came out with the conditions, only to be met by what can only be termed a brick wall defence, led by everyone, with an awesome line speed to annoy the visitors. Again the home side was dominating the set piece, and only several penalties against the dominant scrummage rather confusingly, saving the away side.
In loose play the strong running and rangy Evens was at the fore, and the multi purpose Blenkharn being a pain at every breakdown, along with Whitehead. A front row injury brought on a revved up Nicholson back after injury, seemingly determined to set some sort of record for tackles in a half hour period, Still the pattern of Kendal pressure, Moresby break, and Kendal defence, Kendal pressure continued!
Moresby were rewarded when a quick tap penalty was slung out wide, and in very dodgy footing a slip, a trip and a collision allowed the visitors to score a converted try. Any hopes of a chink of light was extinguished when another Kendal line out was rumbled up the pitch, for any one of the forwards to score, and also claim it, but we have it narrowed down to either Wightman or Blenkharn, so we're awarding it to Pashley!
Pashley took an unfortunate injury after some trademark suicidal defending, which saw Blenkharn go to the centre birth he loves, Garnett to full back, and Mercer to 10, with fossil Perie coming into the fray, after he gave himself much to coach Wrigglesworth's amusement, and his own lack of, last minute bench pace, after Dan Wilson had got injured in the warm up.
The game ended, as it had gone on, with iron defence from the home side, and a new found enjoyment of grinding the game out with hard yards, and mauling.
Another show of massive improvement by the development squad this week, with a new found love of defending, and grinding out a result! Every week more strings are added to this exciting squad's bow.
Many thanks to the people who braved the conditions to trudge over to the millenium pitch, including the usuals ( you know who you are!) and various girlfriends, parents and grandparents. Special thanks to the bravest sponsor in rugby, Mr Uttley for coming over as he always does, and Glen Archer who tried but couldn't due to health and safety!
