Game of Two Halves

Game of Two Halves

Mark Hodgkiss

Kendal Wasps 10 (0) v (31) 31 Keswick Falcons

A game of two halves. In the first half the Falcons pace in attack and defence was too much for the Wasps, forcing errors then breaking away at speed, with scrum half Teagan Quigley particularly impressive scoring two of Keswick five tries. Whilst in fullback Liz Ravalde they have a player who can put long kicks out of defence to test the opposition

However after half time the Wasps came out a different team, and Keswick rarely left their half, but their defence kept the Wasps to two tries, although a third should have been scored, only for the ball to be lost over the line.

Just two changes to the Wasps starting line-up from last week’s opening League win against Peterlee & Horden Valkyries, with Lorne Mellonie starting in the centre and Lydia Fleming joining the front row.

Having gained promotion last season Keswick are now in the League above the Wasps, but had lost their tough opening game, away at Liverpool St Helens.

With another time clash with the Colts, this time the Wasps game was moved to the 3G pitch, and again the rain came for the game.

A bad start for the Wasps. They were on the attack near halfway when a pass was intercepted by Falcon’s centre Bethan Lloyd who went in for the opening try after just two minutes. Fullback Liz Ravalde added the conversion. 0v7

The Falcons added a second try ten minutes later. The Wasps lost the ball deep in the Falcon’s half and there was a good run down the wing. There was a bit of controversy as it appeared a player had delayed her run to block Sarah Wilkinson’s attempt to get back to make a tackle, but referee Martin Maughn made clear he had seen it, and was happy the player had not altered her run 0v12

The lead was immediately extended when the ball was run back from kick off for a third try. 0v17

The fourth try after twenty five minutes was the first for scrum half Teagan Quigley who showed her pace on a weaving run, 0v24 with the conversion

Just before half time another good run from Teagan Quigley saw her add a second and Liz Ravalde added the conversion from a wide angle. 0v31 This was the score at half time.

Playing towards the road end the Wasps looked a different team after half time, keeping the ball and putting together some good attacking moves, but struggled to find a way through the good Keswick defence.

After a long period of pressure in the Keswick half, Amber Byers opened Wasps the scoring with a try following a tap penalty. Lydia Fleming’s kick from a wide angle was not too far out. 5v31

The second try after twenty minutes went to the Wasps replacement fullback Hannah Milling, who played well after coming in. Again the difficult conversion was not too far out 10v31,

The Wasps should have had a third when a good handling move saw a player crossing the line, but lost the ball as they went to touchdown.

This was the final result.

A really good run out for both teams to test their skills in attack and defence before continuing their League campaigns
