The highlights from last weekend and look-ahead to next weekend's rugby action from contributors Mark Hodgkiss, Danny Airey and Craig Ross

Last weekend: 28-29 Sep 19
The Kendal 1st XV secured its first win of the season to elevate themselves off the foot of the North 1 East table. Tries from Alistair Thompson in the first half and Rory Blakeney-Edwards in the second half were supplemented by kicks from club captain Glen Weightman to secure victory. Kendal opened the scoring with a Weightman penalty and having converted Tea Bag’s try, gave the team a 15v3 lead early in the second half, only for Percy Park to come back to level the scores. However, having missed out late on a fortnight ago, this time two Weightman penalties and some desperate defence in injury time, saw the team hold out for a 21v15 win. Still plenty of room for improvement and if all the chances had been taken, there would have been no need for the nail biting ending. Second row Greg Wrathall picked up the Man of the Match for another powerful display, and Danny Barker and Mark Carruthers making his first start of the season, had good games in attack and defence, whilst Rory Blakeney-Edwards looked dangerous when he had the ball in hand.
A strong looking Kendal 2nd XV was defeated by a useful Vale of Lune side, departing Powderham Lane with an overriding feeling of it being a missed opportunity for a win in this local derby. It was 64 minutes into the game, facing a scoreline of 26v0, before Kendal notched up its first points through a blind-side try by Dan Reid, converted by Chris Park. Kendal’s late period of dominance resulted in further tries from Joe Cook and Grant Parker to finish the match at 26v17.
A charity match was held on Sunday featuring a Nige Bullock’s Elite Hornet social team v Anti-Assassins social team. There were no losers, only winners…

Next weekend: 5-6 Oct 19
Next Saturday, the 1st XV makes one of their shorter away trips of the season to Morley, a team that has at least been encountered in recent years, with so many unknown names on this year’s fixture list. Morley sits fourth in the table and was unbeaten until last weekend, when they followed us in being well beaten at early league leaders Driffield 39v29. Their wins have come against mid-table teams, so another solid defensive display, and more of the attacking options coming off, could see a first away win.
Also on Saturday the 2nd XV host Sandbach who currently sit top of the table, following two comfortable home wins from their first two games followed by an away defeat to Birkenhead. Kendal expects to field an even stronger team this week and put on a more complete performance to beat the early league leaders.

Sunday sees the Wasps open their HOME match account playing hosts to York Ladies with an anticipated K.O. at 2pm. It’s free entry at Mint Bridge on both days and everyone, including non-members is welcome!
The U18 Senior Colts travel to Birkenhead Park planning to continue their solid start to the season.
With last weekend’s Kirkby Lonsdale festival cancelled due to flooding, the mini & youth teams are keen to see some competitive action this weekend! U8-U11 teams travel to Fylde, U13 to Kirkby Lonsdale and the U15 play hosts to Kirkby Lonsdale at Mint Bridge.

RWC 2019 continues at the club with mid-week action from New Zealand v Canada at 11.15am on Wednesday, Ireland v Russia on Thursday at 11.15am and South Africa v Italy on Friday at 10.45am, before ENGLAND v Argentina on another ‘Super Saturday’ at 9.00am and Japan v Samoa at 11.30am, with breakfast and lunch served in the Kremer Bar.
