Meet the Team:
Garry Holmes
A Senior Men’s 1st XV coach and the founder of Home-Grown Sports Development, Garry played rugby at Kendal for 22 years before moving into coaching the club’s senior section in 2019. As a level 3 England Rugby coach, Garry led the way in developing the sport around the county for 14 years. A mentoring level 3 coach and referee educator and coach developer are additional key skills, and he has played a significant part in the Cumbria Developing Player Programme (DPP) for over 10 years. He still shares his knowledge and experience as a leader in the programme and is also lead coach for both Cumbria U17 and U18 squads.
Alex Ryder
Alex has 7 years of playing experience and during his 4 years at Queen Katherines School gained invaluable coaching and refereeing development which has supported his work in the county wide Young Volunteer Programme. As a commanding second row competitor, Alex rightly earned his place in the senior men’s XV team last season, and his dedication to the sport should see him become a regular face on the team this season.
Matt Humpage
Matt is a well-regarded member of the teaching staff at Kirkbie Kendal School, and in previous years Lancaster Grammar School, both with an impressive rugby heritage. Part of the Cumbria DPP coaching team, the talented Vale of Lune centre also brings his wealth of experience to the Cumbria U17 and U18 squads as a backs coach. As a player he demonstrates unrelenting lines in defence and attack, recently seen on the pitch as a visitor to the Mintbridge club.
Ben Dixon
A popular member of the local community, Ben lights up the game - and the spectators - with every touch of the ball. Representing Cumbria at all levels and England Universities in the 7's format, a well-deserved second year in the senior set up is imminent this season. As a coach both Ben and the players have gained valuable skills. Kendal's junior teams and attendees at Home Grown Sports Development have been recipients of his boundless enthusiasm, both in group and 1 - 1 sessions. A true motivator, the local lad inspires budding rugby players by bringing his sense of joy to the game.
Through the support and guidance of this fantastic coaching team, playing rugby also develops fitness, resilience and team building skills, alongside a sense of pride and achievement. To book a session or for further information please visit:
