The event, which brings together players aged 55 and over, also supports a local cause: raising funds for CancerCare, a charity the group has chosen to support this year.

For the first time, there is international representation. Players from Schaumburg, Germany, are joining teams from across the UK, including clubs from Scotland, Wigton, Manchester, Lincoln, Pocklington, and Ribblesdale. Schaumburg is the nearest rugby club to Rinteln, Kendal’s twin town. A visit by Sven Maibaum, President of Schaumburg, to the club in December (2024) prompted the entry.

Players and referees originally from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa will also participate in the festival.

Kendal Rugby Club says it’s proof of rugby's global appeal, the benefits of physical activity, and the sense of community the sport creates at any age.

Head of Kendal Auld Greys Pete Halsall said: “The festival is almost unique in the world of rugby. Players from all the clubs represented are completely mixed up as teams are formed by drawing out names from a hat. This had proved to be a great way to reduce competition, increase socialising and maximise the fun. Scores are not kept, so there are no results, and the focus is on participation and enjoyment,” adds Pete.

Walking rugby is aimed at people aged 55 and over. While some players have past experience in the sport, others are returning after many years or are trying it for the first time.

“Walking rugby has kept our group active, but it’s also created a strong support network,” says Pete.

“We’ve seen new friendships form, and many members join our other walking and social groups. Every week, we have at least 25 people at our sessions. They’re probably more energetic and welcoming than people would expect.”

The festival also aims to strengthen links between walking rugby groups, not only between Kendal, Schaumburg, Rinteln, but also between Kendal and Wigton’s walking rugby group.

Kendal Rugby Club says fundraising activities on the day will add to the £850 the club has already raised for CancerCare.
