Cumbria Cup Quarter Final

Kendal started the Cumbria cup with an away quarter final at Penrith.
The two teams have been evenly matched in recent years and so a close game was expected. That’s exactly how the first half played out with both teams struggling to string long sequences of play together but both back lines looking dangerous and making significant ground when getting the ball out to the wingers.
Penrith made the stronger start and took a 7-0 lead after 5 mins through good interplay between forwards and backs.
Kendal came back into it and scored a very similar try themselves with Alfie following up some strong forward carries to find a gap to score; Tristan made the conversion to level the scores at 7-7.
Shortly afterwards however Kendal lost one of there influential players when Kurt suffered a nasty looking knee injury, which we’re all hoping he recovers quickly from and we get to see more of his strong runs on the pitch again soon.
The Kendal lads didn’t let this affect them and probably just shaded the final 15mins of the first half but were held up over the line a couple of times to leave a half time score of 7-7.
Some simple instructions at half time to command the ruck better and build the phases, had the desired effect for Kendal as they were much improved in the second half and took the lead 5 mins in as they moved the ball well to the wing, to allow Roan to use his pace to score out wide which was well converted by Tristan. Kendal then gave themselves some breathing space as Alfie dummied his way through for another try out wide and extend the lead to 7-19. Then with 10 mins remaining Kendal put the game out of Penrith’s reach with another converted try for a final score of 7-26.
Kendal are definitely better from having a larger squad this year, making for better trng sessions and all players being able to make their own personal improvements and understanding of the game. All 20 players put in a great shift at Penrith and can now look forward to a home semi-final against Carlisle. The date for this semi-final should be arranged shortly so keep an eye out on the social media channels and then reserve the date to get down and support the team; they all say they play better with a large crowd behind them.
