After last week’s game at Kirkby where our squad showed their eagerness to pass the ball out of the tackle, this weekend’s session was aimed at improving on this and encouraging them to pass before the tackle and pass to players in space.
Yet again our hornets showed good understanding of the new drills and quickly picked up what was asked of them. It was great to see that our players are now learning from each other as well as from the coaches; as they see the good play from their friends and try to repeat it the next time they run through the drill.
By the time we moved into the end of session game the squad were showing much more direct running; encouraged to pass the ball to a teammate rather than run sideways or backwards looking for space of their own.
There were lots of great performances during this game: Logan, Alfie and Caleb all scoring 2-3 tries early on and so finding themselves “temporarily banned” from scoring anymore - which in itself encouraged them to look for their teammates with good passes. There was good direct running from Will O and Ben, at least until Ben took a knock to head which ended his training session earlier than he would have liked (get better soon Ben). We also had great recognition of where the space was from Sid, Leo K, Blake and Alex. So on a day when there was lots of excellent performances, the Player of the week this weekend went to a player who followed up his good showing at Kirkby with another good display of forceful direct running and committed defence - so very well done Jacob.
