Quarter finals of the National cup for the Wasps

The Wasps made the long journey to Scunthorpe hoping to make the last eight of the national junior cup but also looking to remain unbeaten this season. Several players were unavailable but a strong squad were confident of progressing through to the next round.

The game started with a spell of Scunthorpe pressure, their large pack really challenging the Kendal forwards. The Kendal defence remained strong and when turnover ball was secured, Tanya Bushell made the break for Vanessa Temple to run in for a converted try.
The game then entered a spell of one way traffic with the Wasps playing great running rugby and looking very dangerous from anywhere on the pitch. Nessa Temple added her second and third tries of the game with her elusive running causing problems for the Scunthorpe defence throughout the game. Sarah Simpson also scored from her excellent chasing of a clearance kick. Temple added her fourth try shortly after.

A Kendal mistake gave Scunthorpe possession in the Kendal half and after several strong carries and excellent ball retention, Scunthorpe managed to crash over the line for an unconverted try. The first try the Wasps have conceded in over three games!
Just before half time, Sarah Simpson added her second try of the game to bring the half time score to 36-5.

The second half was more of the same for the Wasps, looking dangerous every time they were in possession. Rachelle Malette scored in the corner after another sweeping Wasps move and great interplay between Bryoni Bland and Malette.
Great play from the backs enabled Emma Grunnill to run in from 40 metres after some excellent support play. Sarah Simpson completed her hat trick with a great run and cheeky dummy, Simpson is thriving in her new full back role.
The final try was scored by Emily Knowles, who finished well after good running from Sarah Simpson.
Scunthorpe had several spells of pressure in the second half but the Wasps defence held firm, credit to Scunthorpe who battled the whole match and wouldn’t give up.

A great team performance from the Wasps, the forwards providing the platform against a much bigger pack for the backs to exploit out wide.
Players of the match were Nessa Temple, who now has 25 tries in eight games, and Tanya Bushell, who looked lively all game and formed a good half back partnership with Abby Bland.

The Wasps next game sees them travel to Vagabonds in the Isle of Man for a very tough away fixture.
