Kendal Wasps travelled to Preston in their first league game in Championship North 2 after winning their league and gaining promotion last season. With a tough pre season behind them, the Wasps were more than ready for the game.
Kendal started brightly and strong carries from the forwards took Kendal into the Preston half. After several phases the ball was recycled allowing Abby Bland to cross from close range.
Straight from the kick off Kendal were on the front foot again, with Vanessa Temple scoring a fine try from half way. Temple added her second shortly after as the Wasps were really taking the game to the home side. Hayley Hodgson then scored her first try of the afternoon just before half time, bringing the half time score to 20 nil.
The second half started with Hodgson scoring her second try. The Kendal forwards making big yards with strong running allowing the backs time and space for their attacking moves.
When Preston did have the ball, the Wasps defence stung into action and repelled any attack before seizing the moment for a turnover.
Temple and Hodgson both completed their hat tricks and Abby Bland added her second as the Wasps cut loose playing some fantastic rugby in the sunny conditions. Nessa Temple and Hayley Hodgson both finished the game with four tries each and Bland added three second half conversions to bring the final score to 56 nil.
Credit to Preston who made Kendal work hard for every point and gave their all up to the final whistle. In a game where every Kendal player was outstanding, Kerry Proctor was chosen as forward of the match and Abby Bland as back of the match.
Despite the score line, still plenty to work on for the Wasps before a tough trip to Carlisle on Sunday, 3pm kick off.
