Kendal Wasps travelled to Darlington for their third consecutive away game, looking to make it three wins from three in the new league campaign.
The Wasps started the game brightly with several strong forward carries giving the Wasps good field position, this gave Hayley Hodgson the space to beat the defence and run in from halfway. Almost immediately from the restart the Kendal forwards took play into the Darlington half and the ball was moved to Vanessa Temple who scored after a weaving run to the try line.
The Wasps fast start brought Darlington to life and their huge forward pack started to get a foothold in the game. A Wasps mistake in their own 22 gave Darlington the position to drive their way to the try line, in another blow for the Wasps Emily Knowles was injured in trying to prevent the try.
Kendal then had a good spell of pressure with Nessa Temple adding her second try of the game and Abby Bland barged over from close range to put the Wasps further clear. Back came Darlington and after a strong scrummage, the Darlington no.8 touched down to bring the half time score to 26-10.
The second half was a real forward battle with Darlington really taking the game to Kendal. For long periods the Kendal defence was under huge pressure but the line would not be broken. After making ground through their forwards, Darlington looked to move the ball wide but Nessa Temple read the play and intercepted to complete her hat trick.
The Darlington attack kept coming but the Wasps commitment to defence was outstanding and this enabled the forwards to secure turnover ball and the ball was sent wide to Abby Bland who ran in to score her second try of the game.
Darlington wouldn’t give up and came back strongly, a catch and drive from a lineout proved one attack too many for the Wasps and Darlington added their third try of the game. The final score being 40-15 to the Wasps.
The Wasps made it three wins in a row after promotion to a higher league, a win built on fantastic defence. Rachelle Malette was named forward of the match with an all action performance and Nessa Temple was back of the match, her strong running bringing another hat trick.
The Wasps next game is a long trip to Sheffield, also unbeaten so far in the league, another big challenge but the Wasps can go into the game in confident mood after a great start to the season.
