A 100th (recorded) game for Sarah Wilkinson and a return to Mint Bridge, with her new team Chester Diva's, for former Wasps scrum half Cath Sewell
A wet afternoon, was started with a minute's silence on Remembrance Sunday.
The Diva's started the better and had along spell in attack but the Wasps held out.
The Wasps then had time in the Diva's half but also could not score
The Diva's came back but could not get through the Wasps defence
Finally the opening score came after twenty five minutes with a try on the left for the Diva's after good passing. 0v5
The Wasps came back towards the end of the half. There was a good run through the centre for Sarah Wilkinson, only to be stopped just before the line. When the ball came out Hailey Coutts, who was having a good game, had Sophie Postlethwaite outside her, but used hesitation in the Diva's back line to stride through for the try.
This was the last action of the half, so the teams turned all square 5v5, with the Diva's probably having had the better half.
Things stayed even at the start of the second half.
The Diva's backline broke though a number of times, but there were a number of try saving tackles from Kate Birchall; Sophie Postlethwaite and Tamar Benson
There was a good run out of defence by Hailey Hodgson, but the Diva's defence was able to hunt her down, and she was unable to get the pass away to Sophie Postlethwaite, who had done well to get in support.
Unfortunately Hodgson was injured when tackled, and with Suzie Winter and Claire Geldard also forced off with injuries, a lot of experience was lost for the Wasps .
Finally the deadlock was broken after twenty minutes with a second Diva's try which was quickly followed by a third to take the game away from the Wasps. 5v15
The Wasps continued to work hard to keep the well organised Diva's out
They did concede two further tries after half an hour (converted) and with the final move if the game.
There were chances for a second Wasps try, but the Diva's defence was too strong
One slightly sour note, was suggestions the injuries to Claire Geldard and Grace Owen at the end of the game had been the result of foul play. If we are to encourage more players into the game and keep those we have, this needs to be dealt with quickly and referees cannot see everything that is going on.
Next Wasps game, also at Mint Bridge is in a fortnight (23rd) against Sheffield
Wasps Forward of Game : Sarah Wilkinson
Wasps Back of the Game : Sophie Postlethwaite
