Another loss for the Wasps, but also another improved performance, against a Driffield team who sit in second just two points behind leaders Bishops Auckland, and were made to work hard for their four tries
On a very wet afternoon, the game was played on the main pitch with a Colts game on the 3G. A third of the squad were in their debut season and a number of the more experienced Wasps players were not involved.
The Wasps started well, but Driffield soon took control and dominated much of the half, but the Wasps defence was solid.
Emma Lifshitz, who had been with Sale FC 1861 who top Championship 1, since the start of the season, came on after twenty minutes to replace Ruby Kirkham, going fullback with Katy Birchall, joining the back row.
Driffield opened the scoring with a try by prop Sophie Mawer 0v5
Ten minutes later the Wasps were temporarily reduced to fourteen, when Sarah Wilkinson was yellow carded for not allowing Driffield to go ten metre following a quickly taken penalty at a scrum.
The Wasps held out and did have a chance of a score of their own on a rare visit to the Driffield twenty-two late on, but Driffield maintained their narrow lead at half time.
The lead was extended with a converted try after two minutes of the second half, 0v12 and a third try followed five minutes later 0v19, but the Wasps did not fold and had a better half attacking, but could not score.
Driffield added a fourth try after half an hour. 0v24
Despite the scoreline a positive performance against a strong well organised opposition, with the newer players contributing in both attack and defence.
Next week an equally tough task with a trip to lead League leaders Bishop Auckland, who won 8v60 at Mint Bridge earlier in the season.
The team then have a weekend off before a big game at Mint Bridge on the 8th February against Sefton, the team a point above them in table, who they drew with away earlier in the season, and who got a try scoring bonus point in a 34v24 loss to Bishop Auckland this weekend.
According to the RFU site the postponed game against Sheffield will now take place on SATURDAY 14th February.
