Match Report for by guest reporter Mark Singleton:
Well today is the day that 1st plays 2nd in the league!
Kendal travelled south to Ashton-under-Lyne looking to avenge the last minute defeat suffered in the home tie earlier in the season, but with 3 players missing due to illness: Corey Livesey, Sam Keech and Joe Wilson, with Reece Wilson making his debut.
After what can only be described as a 'broom cupboard' for a changing room, Kendal took to the field with determination in the cold swirling windy conditions.
Kendal kicked-off, but both teams struggled to cope with the wind. Ultimately, it was Kendal that settled and adapted the best.
After 10 mins Kendal got over the try line but it was adjudged to be held-up. From the resulting 5m scrum, Bradley Butterworth gathered the ball and forced himself over the line for a well-deserved try, which was unconverted.
0 v 5
From the restart, the Kendal forwards dominated play with some good interplay from the backs eventually leading to another breach of the Ashton try line, but the referee's decision being 'held-up'. From the resulting scrum it was Owen Singleton that received the ball and went over for Kendal's second unconverted try.
0 v 10
From the restart, a bad injury forced the match to be moved onto the 2nd pitch, but with only a few minutes to go in the 1st half, the team seemed to lose a bit of concentration, resulting in an Ashton try right on half time.
5 v 10
With the injured player removed, the second half resumed back on the 1st team pitch. Kendal forwards again dominated play and went over the try line, but yet again, the decision was 'held up'. Ashton did produce a good passage of play which saw them score their 2nd try in the corner.
10 v 10
Good phases of play followed and with 7 minutes to go Sam Coleman received the ball on a diagonal run and powered over the line
10 v 15
Another injury to an Ashton player saw the match moved again to the 2nd pitch, but this time Kendal dug deep and held out for a well-deserved win!
Every player from 1 - 18 played together as a unit with determination and gave 100%. Too many players to mention individuals.
I would like to thank the team, the coaches and the away support the lads had today with nearly a full coach!
