against a team who played far better than their League position suggests

Kendal came into the game, against a team yet to win this season, following a good performance in the away loss at Morley last weekend.

The only changes were Mark Carruthers returning, which saw Nick Carlton move onto the wing and Ben Dixon go back to his normal back row position. Steven Nelson had been due to return, but dropped out with Josh Chaplow being promoted off the bench, and Richard Harryman coming onto to fill the spot on the bench.

Both teams made early mistakes, but it was Huddersfield who had the better start, keeping the ball through multiple phases of possession and Kendal could not get any ball.

After one move the referee allowed a very long period of Huddersfield advantage, before bringing play back for a penalty. Huddersfield took the kick at goal, and when this fell short, Danny Barker, put a kick upfield. This was gathered for another Huddersfield attack, but Barker followed his kick, and not only made the tackle, but prevented the ball going to ground to give Kendal the scrum.

On almost their first attack Kendal took the lead. At a Kendal lineout the throw missed the intended target, but this worked well for Kendal as Jack Lashley gathered the loose ball and set off on a run, bouncing out of a number of attempted tackles, and making good ground. When he was stopped the ball was re-cycled, and the referee caught Huddersfield offside in midfield, but Glen Weightman used the advantage to break the Huddersfield defence and weave through for the try, but was unable to add the conversion. 5v0.

Huddersfield were quickly back on the attack, and Kendal had another long period in defence. Huddersfield centre Gavin Stead broke through several times, but each time the Kendal defence got back to stop him.

There had been a number of fracas between players, with the referee calling in both captains to issue a warning to their players. The latest one was between Danny Barker and a Huddersfield second row, who appeared to land a number of punches on Barker, but was then injured and receive a long period of treatment. Huddersfield had a replacement ready to come on, but as the second row was helped off, the referee waved a Red card at him, to reduce Huddersfield to fourteen men for the rest of the game.

Shortly afterwards Kendal were forced to make a change with Dane Blenkharn coming on for Dan Greenwood, with Josh Chaplow going to No.8 and Blenkharn playing on the flank.

Glen Weightman put an excellent long rolling kick to the corner, forcing Hudderfield into a lineout near their line. They won the ball and tried to run out of defence, but the ball was turned over and Josh Chaplow gathered and managed to power to the line for a try. Glen Weightman put over an excellent conversion kick. 12v0 after half an hour.

The third Kendal try came from another long Glen Weightman kick out of defence, after Huddersfield lost the ball. Rory Blakeney-Edwards and Joe Cook chased the kick, but Huddersfield players got there first, however good Kendal pressure forced a knock on, to give Kendal an attacking scrum. When the ball came back, Danny Barker made a break, and the ball was then moved to Nick Carlton who took the move on, before passing to Mark Carruthers who got to the line, but was stopped, but Nick Carlton was on hand to take the scoring pass, with Glen Weightman converting again. 19v0.

Kendal were now in control and regularly breaking he Huddersfield defence, but this lead to a number of poor options being taken, with players going themselves when they had better placed players in support.

The final score of the half in injury time came from a scrum. Josh Chaplow picked the ball up and went right and the ball was moved to Jack Blakeney-Edwards, who seemed to have a lot to do with defenders in front of him, but got through for the score. Having converted two from the left, Glen Wightman put this conversion over from the far right to end the half. 26v0

Despite the scoreline and numerical advantage, Kendal found themselves with a long period in defence, but weathered the storm to go to the other end of the field.

From a lineout the forwards drove to the line for Chris Evans to get the final touchdown 31v0

After twenty five minutes Nathan Wooff came on for Joe Cook and made an immediate impact, without touching the ball. As Huddersfield mounted an attack down their left touchline, Wooff urged Rory Blakeney-Edwards, who had gone on to the wing, to go forward. Often interceptions come from passes which were obvious, this time it was the defender’s plans that were obvious, but in their rush to move the ball wide, it was missed by the Huddersfield players, and once the ball was in his hands there was going to be no stopping Blakeney-Edwards who went over from his own half, with Glen Weightman adding the conversion. 38v0.

Nathan Wooff was also involved in the next try, possibly with ball in hand for the first time he weaved through the Huddersfield defence, and whilst he was stopped from the resulting ruck, Jordan Johnson picked up to dart through for a try, again converted by Glen Weightman.

Dane Blenkharn came off to be replaced by Richard Harryman.

Huddersfield continued to look for their opening score, and again Kendal had to weather a long period of attack in their twenty two, but Greg Wrathall stole the ball and Nathan Wooff got an excellent long clearance kick away.

Huddersfield finally got their score from the last play of the game. They were awarded a penalty after another altercation between players, this time involving Jack Lashley. Huddersfield won the lineout and drove for the line, it appeared the Kendal pack had manage to hold them out, but the referee had spotted an infringement and headed behind the post for a penalty try.

Whilst it was disappointing not hold up for a clean sheet, Huddersfield certainly deserved something from their hard work. They certainly did not play like a team without a win, but conceding their sixth try scoring bonus point of the season, and seven tries against a team who had only scored eight in their first five games, shows their defence is not a as strong as their attack.

Did the sending off change the result ? It certainly did not help their cause, but they probably lost less lineout ball after it happened, and their scrum was never troubled, whilst the defensive problems were more behind the pack, than up front.

For Kendal another good performance, this time rewarded by a good result, which takes them out of the bottom three, but there is still plenty of work to do to get to a safe mid-table position, or challenge for a spot towards the top, starting next weekend with a long trip to a Pocklington team who sit just below them, and will be looking to leapfrog Kendal

Plenty of promise, but still room for improvement.

KENDAL MAN OF THE MATCH : Glen Weightman
Some excellent place kicking, and positional kicks to put the team on the attack, plus the opening try, saw Glen top the pole.

I thought there was going to be plenty of choice this week, and fourteen players (including two subs) got at least one vote (and the ones who missed out played well). I had also expected a tight vote, but Glen was well clear of Danny Barker, with the rest in the distance.

I think this was the equal second biggest vote (the biggest was for Dini's try performance against Wigton five years ago, where he got 80% of a massive vote. The other big one was unsuprisingly against Kirkby Lonsdale in the game which gave the team promotion, when Danny topped the poll)
