Keswick 1st XV 45 Kendal Development XV 5
Another weekend for the Development xv in Cumbria One, saw the team go to play top of the table ,Keswick,, without some of the team's regulars, who were on first team duty again.
Keswick started brightly, and scored 2 quick tries, from well worked moves by their handy backline. Kendal started getting a foothold in the game, and basically put enormous pressure on the opposition in defence, after a shaky start, and tentitively started to win more ball in the forwards, via an ever improving set piece. Unfortunately injuries to both props brought on comedy fossil Arthur Perie, as well as a more dynamic looking Tommy Moulton.
After having parity for the final 15 mins of the half, a team talk from Steve Wrigglesworth, Perie and captain Tom Whitehead, brought about the desired effect . Kendal started as Keswick had in the first half. A well worked lineout, found man of the match Chris Evans perfectly, and a tightened drive saw Rhys Studt score in the corner.
The next 20 mins, saw the young Kendal pack dominate their older counterparts, and the backs start to make in roads into midfield. Dan Blenkhorn had a try chalked off, and some promising moves broke down also.
The last 15 mins of the game saw the homeside move away on the scoreboard, again with some well worked play, but the development squad never gave up, with the home side knowing they had been in a dog fight by the end. It would be wrong to single anyone out, but the whole of the pack excelled, and the backs are increasingly looking like they are gelling also.Chris Evans was voted man of match by the opposition, but the young forwards have seemingly come of age, and a lot of positives will come from this display, and the confidence that skipper Dave Whitehead gives them, with his usual excellent play.
